Bengali families have a deep bond with Maa, and many plan the Vaishno Devi yatra around the Durga Puja and Diwali holidays. Since Sharad Navratri falls around the same time, Katra is very busy then, so early booking matters more than ever.
By rail, trains from Howrah and Kolkata run toward Jammu Tawi, and some continue to Katra. The journey takes around a day and a half, so a comfortable AC berth is worth it. By air, flights from Kolkata to Jammu usually connect through Delhi, and the trip can be done in three days.

If you fly instead, you land in Jammu on Day 1 and fly home on Day 3.
- Day 0 – Leave KolkataBoard your train toward Jammu Tawi or Katra. It is a long ride, so pack food, water, a shawl and some reading for the journey.
- Day 1 – Reach KatraOur driver picks you up at the station and checks you in at your Katra hotel. Get your Yatra RFID card and rest.
- Day 2 – Climb to the BhawanBegin early on foot via Banganga and Ardhkuwari, or take a pony, palki or helicopter. After darshan, go up to Bhairon Nath by ropeway if you have the energy, then return to Katra.
- Day 3 – Head HomeA slow morning, some shopping in Katra market, and a drop at the station for the train back to Kolkata.
