Overview
From the Valley to Mata’s Darbar
For families in Srinagar and the rest of the Kashmir valley, Vaishno Devi is close to home but separated by the Pir Panjal range. Until recently the only ways down were the Jammu–Srinagar highway or a flight to Jammu. Since 2025, trains also run between Srinagar and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra station, and many pilgrims now find the rail journey the easiest option.
The road is still a good choice for families who want a private car from their door. The highway through the Banihal tunnel and down towards Udhampur usually takes most of a day, depending on traffic and weather, so we plan an overnight stay in Katra before the helicopter day.
Once you reach Katra, the yatra is simple. A 6-minute flight takes you to Sanjichhat, about 3 km from the Bhawan, and the same-day return brings you back to your hotel by evening.

Train or Road from Srinagar?
The train is quicker and avoids highway closures, but seats can be limited, so book early. The road gives you a car from your home and the freedom to stop on the way. In winter, when snow can close the highway, the train is usually the safer bet.
