Chennai to Vaishno Devi: What to Expect
For Chennai families, the yatra to Mata Vaishno Devi is a journey across the whole country, and the first thing most people notice on arrival is the cold. Even in summer, early mornings at the Bhawan can feel chilly to someone used to Chennai weather, and winter nights drop close to freezing. We always remind our Tamil Nadu guests to pack proper warm clothes.
Flying is the most popular choice. Flights from Chennai to Jammu usually connect via Delhi, and our car meets you at Jammu Airport. With the helicopter to Sanjichhat included, the whole yatra fits into three days.
Chennai also has long-distance trains towards Jammu and Katra. The journey is long, usually more than two days each way, so the train plan is best for retired couples and families with plenty of holiday time.
Food and Comfort

Suggested Plan: Chennai by Flight
Three days, two nights in Katra, with the helicopter on darshan day.
- Day 1 · Chennai to KatraEarly flight from Chennai to Jammu, usually with a change in Delhi. Our driver meets you at Jammu Airport for the drive of about 50 km to Katra. Check in, register for your Yatra RFID card and rest. Dinner and overnight.
- Day 2 · DarshanDrop at the Katra helipad for the short flight to Sanjichhat, then walk about 3 km to the Bhawan. After darshan, visit Bhairon Nath temple and fly back to Katra. Without the helicopter, trek from Banganga on foot or by pony or palki.
- Day 3 · Back to ChennaiBreakfast and a walk in the Katra market for prasad, dry fruits and shawls. Drive to Jammu Airport for your flight home.
